61 - Census

Chareen's Thoughts
  • Today is the start of the third month on our journey through the Word of our Lord.  I have enjoyed the last two months and hope you will be blessed over the next month with us too.
  • In yesterday's reading we met Balaam and the king of  Moab who wanted Balaam to curse Israel but the Lord gave him a blessing to pronounce three times.
  • Today we read the Poem / Prophecy of destruction over Moab and Edom and Amalek.
  • While in the plains near Moab some Israelites started worshiping Baal and the Lord commanded Moses to execute them in front of Israel.
  • After this execution one man still brazenly took a midianite for a wife and in front of the assembly took her home. Then Phinehas killed the two of them.  Because of this act the Lord stopped allowing the Israelites dying [24,000 had died so far.] and placed a perpetual blessing on his home. (Numbers 25:6-18 & Psalm 106:28-31)
  • The Lord required a census. There total number of men 20 years and older were: 601,730 In the tribe of Levi there were 23,000 males one month old and older.

    First Census Second Census
    Reubin 43,730
    Simeon 59,300 Simeon 22,200
    Gad 45,650 Gad 40,500
    Judah 79,600 Judah 76,500
    Issachar 54,400 Issachar 64,300
    Zebulun 57,400 Zebulun 60,500
    Ephraim 40,500 Ephraim 32,500
    Manasseh 32,400 Manasseh 52,700
    Benjamin 35,400 Benjamin 45,600
    Dan 62,700 Dan 64,400
    Asher 41,500 Asher 53,400
    Naphtali 45,400
Total Registered: 603,550 Total Registered: 601,730
    Levites 22,000 Levites 23,000

  • After the census was taken the people realise that not one person from the previous generation was alive accept Joshua and Caleb. 603 548 males alone had died in the wilderness.
  •  The Lord instructed the Israelites on how to divide the land and gave them the inheritance laws.

61 - Second Census taken for those who can serve in Israels army

Kathleen's thoughts

In these chapters the second census' were taken of men over the age of 20 or more for the Israelites army.

The Lord spoke to Moses about the division of land and the peoples inheritance. Moses was given instructions here.

In chapter 25 the people started to have sexual relationships with the woman of Moab and these woman invited them to do sacrifices for their gods and the people bowed down and worshiped their gods. God saw this and told Moses "Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the Lord sot hat His burning anger may turn away from Israel" So Moses told Israel's judges, "Kill each of the men who aligned themselves with Baal of Peor"

Phinehas son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest noticed a Midianite woman with a Israelite man who brought her to his relatives in the sight of Moses. Phiinehas got up and took a spear following them into a tent and drove the spear through both of them. Then the plague on the Israelites was stopped There were 24,000 who died from that plague.
The Lord spoke to moses and said that Phinehas has turned back My wrath from the Israelites he was zealous among them with My Zeal and therefore declare; I grant him my Covenant of peace It will be a covenant of perpetual priesthood for him and his descendants.

The Lord gives Moses instructions on the Inheritance law.
Here you can see that the Lord has compassion for woman who's family has no sons and they allowed to have the inheritance of their father's estate.

One can see when the second census is taken a whole generation has gone with the exception of Joshua and Caleb who was promised they will walk into the land of milk and honey.

53 - Of peace and Order

Chareen's Thoughts
source
  • Today we arrived in the book of Numbers.  I love the story of Joshua son of Nunn.  As I have read I have been inspired to read a historical fiction account of Moses and Joshua.  I have found this to be an enriching journey.
  • Thirteen months into the journey from Egypt the Lord instructed a census be taken. There were a total of 603 550 males 20 years old and older in the eleven tribes in the house of Israel. (The Levites were excluded from this census.
  • They were to encamp in their military divisions under their banners.  God is a god of order. 1 Corinthians 14:33 For He [Who is the source of their prophesying] is not a God of confusion and disorder but of peace and order. As [is the practice] in all the churches of the saints (God's people),
I feel challenged today to make my home a place of peace and order.

Blessings

53 - Time to move out of Sinai

Kathleen's thoughts

The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai. Moses was to take a census of the entire Israelite community by the clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of every male one by one. You and Aaron are to register those who are 20 years old or more by their military divisions - everyone who can serve in Israel's army. A man from each tribe is to be with you, each one the head of his ancestral houses.

The descendants of Reuben, male of 20 years old or more 46,500
Simeon 59,300
Gad 45,650
Judah 79,600
Issachar 54,400
Zebulun 57,400
The descendants of Joseph
Ephraim 40,500
Manasseh 32,400
Benjamin 35,400
Dan 62,700
Asher 41,500
The descendants of Naphtail 53,400

These are the men Moses and Aaron resigered by their ancestral houses. All those registered numbered 603,550

The Levites were not registered as the Lord told Moses not too. They were to take care of the tabernacle of the testimony and its furnishings and everything in it. They are to transport the tabernacle and all its articles, take care of it, and camp around it.

The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron "The Israelites are to camp under their respective banners beside the flags of their ancestral houses. They are to camp around the tent of meeting at a distance from it.

God gave specific instructions to each tribe where to camp.

And so the journey from Sinai to Kadesh-Barnea begins
Numbers 10:11 During the second year, in the second month on the twentieth day of the month, the cloud was lifted up about the tabernacle of the testimony. 13. They set out for the first time according to the Lord's command through Moses.

The wind blows where it pleases, and youxhear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.
